Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Medical Advancement, the Senior Director of Strategic Engagement will be responsible for designing and executing strategies that drive constituent engagement and deepen relationships with donors, alumni, house staff, and parents. This is a key position in Medical Advancement and the incumbent will work in with all areas of Advancement. The position will oversee the business units of donor relations, alumni & constituent engagement, and stewardship. In addition, the position will integrate these functional areas to create a comprehensive and robust strategic engagement program to engage, inform, cultivate and deepen relationships with the schoolâ™s various constituencies.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Donor Relations: Working with the function area of Donor Relations, the Senior Directorâ™s roles and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise the Director of Donor Relations and help build the program by recruiting future donor relations professionals.
Collaborate with Major Gift Officers, working in conjunction with the function area of Stewardship to perform the following Donor Relations activities: development of individual donor impact plans to highlight how philanthropic support is advancing the School of Medicine; oversee preparation of well-researched, well-written, and highly individualized impact reports for key donors; plan highly tailored individualized donor events and campus visits.
Alumni & Constituent Engagement:Working with the function area of Alumni & Constituent Engagement, the Senior Directorâ™s roles and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise the Director of Alumni & Constituent Engagement and possible future growth of the function area.
Oversee key programming including:
Celebration Weekend/Reunion: oversee and manage the planning and management of a successful annual reunion providing a variety of engagement and cultivation activities.
Washington University Medical Center Alumni Association (WUMCAA): analyze the WUMCAA and develop a strategy to enhance the level engagement and cultivation provided through this volunteer experience.
Develop and implement a strategic plan to further engage various School of Medicine constituencies.
Stewardship: Working with the function area of Stewardship, the Senior Directorâ™s roles and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise the Director of Stewardship and possible future growth of the function area that currently includes the Associate Director of Stewardship.
Oversee key programming including stewardship reporting for professorships, scholarships, endowment funds, expendable funds, and gift acknowledgements.
Assist with the preparation of the School of Medicineâ™s National Council Meetings.Â
In coordination with the Office of Special Events, implement the professorship installation planning process.Â
Undertake other projects and duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Medical Advancement.Â
Preferred Qualifications
Masterâ™s degree or terminal degree.
Experience within a complex university or academic medical research institution, national non-profit organization, or organization with sub-units and complex reporting relationships.
Previous success in fundraising (Annual Giving and/or Major Gifts).
Highly successful and experienced professional with thorough knowledge of institutional development, particularly higher education and/or medicine.
Demonstrated understanding and success at operating in a matrixed, and sometime ambiguous environment.
Political skill and judgment when dealing with diverse constituencies within said environment.
Ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative staff members.Â
Event planning and execution experience.
Ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of the School of Medicine to a wide range of audiences.
Capacity to perform in an intellectually rigorous and complex environment, exhibit personal characteristics enabling effective interaction with important constituencies.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct development programs requiring a high degree of coordination and cooperation with other staff.
Outstanding ability helping to plan, coordinate and manage development projects and campaigns.
Demonstrated expertise with personal solicitations, stewardship and gift processes.
Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents (board members, chancellor, vice chancellors, deans, school or unit directors, etc.).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Exceptional organizational abilities with commitment to meet deadlines.
Required Qualifications
Bachelorâ™s degree.
Minimum of six years of related experience.

Salary Range
$89,300.00 - $157,200.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
