Position Summary:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Associate Controller for University Accounting. Reporting to the University Controller, the Associate Controller for University Accounting is directly responsible for managing and controlling the University's Accounting operations, Plant Funds, Lease Administration, External and Internal Reporting area and the Chart of Accounts team. The Associate Controller is responsible for the development and enforcement of accounting and University policies and procedures to safeguard the University's assets. This position is also responsible for all financial reporting, as well as the integrity of the underlying Accounting system. As of Fiscal Year End 2020, University Accounting manages and controls over $6.7 billion in University assets, $4.1 billion in University revenues, $4.3 billion in University operating expenditures and $2.235 billion of University debt.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Acts as the primary contact for the annual University audit and interacts with the external auditors on a regular basis along with all other offices throughout the University in the completion of the audit.
- Responsible for the oversite and preparation of the annual financial report, including the MD&A, financial statements, and note disclosure.
- Responsible for the annual financial closing, as well as monthly closings, and clearly communicates to the University community on scheduling and deadlines.
- Works closely with each Campus Chancellor Finance office, the Central VP Finance/Business Offices, and all University Finance and Administration (UFA) offices on accounting issues and the resolutions.
- Assists, or acts on behalf of, the University Controller in special projects or committee representation as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 7 years of progressively responsible, professional accounting and supervisory experience in public accounting, general accounting, fund accounting, financial reporting or financial analysis.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong communicator, effective project manager, collaborative team player and possess the ability to establish strong personal relationships with internal and external stakeholders and to serve as an articulate spokesperson and representative of the University Controller's Office.
- Ability to understand complex concepts and make decisions.
- Ability to set clear direction and priorities for the overall office operations and individual departments.
- Must have accounting and financial systems experience and creative ability to develop fiscal policies, procedures, and program systems within the larger context of a strategic financial and business planning environment.
- Experienced change manager with the ability to evaluate organizational structures and personnel and implement new roles and responsibilities as well as process efficiencies that better align outputs and customer service with the needs of the university.
- An energetic, seasoned individual with progressively responsible experience in financial leadership roles.
- Must be a consensus builder with vision, comfortable facilitating change, and proven ability to engage various constituencies in difficult and challenging decisions.
- Must have an appreciation for the mission, traditions and culture of Rutgers University.
- Well grounded in accounting rules and procedures, with a proven track record of working across the enterprise to solve problems and advance an institution's goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MBA or a master's degree in accountancy.
- Specialized knowledge of College and University Accounting.
- Experience in a large, decentralized, multifaceted organization, preferably higher education.
